ENGLISH LANGUAGE
& LITERATURE

Language Arts Programme

The Junyuan Language Arts programme aims to develop critical and creative thinking through exposure and analysis of varied literary works. Books with literary merits are used as textbooks.  Students learn the craft of writing, literary response skills and analysis of linguistic features in these texts and apply them in real-world communicative situations. They are also given the opportunities to hone their communicative skills essential for the 21st century. These include presentation skills, debate, speech and public speaking, story telling, drama performances and the use of persuasive discourse.

To develop effective communication, our students participate in competitions and events at the school, zonal and national levels.  These include oratorical and creative writing activities.

Through literary works, students engage with social issues and competing values in this globalized world so that they learn values that will enable them to participate responsibly in schools and civic life.

Sustained Silent Reading (SSR)

The SSR aims to develop and sustain interest in life-long reading.  Students read silently in designated time period with the availability of multiple level and high interest texts. They then engage in post-reading activities aim to develop their language process skills such as vocabulary, grammar, comprehension, and reflective writing. Regular immersion in such a reading community serves to nurture a positive attitude towards reading.

Multi-literacies programme

In today's world of knowledge economy, students must be able to interpret information and use language through mutliple medium. In Junyuan, students develop digital and visual literacy by direct engagement in the critical production and consumption of all forms of media, accompanied by processes of reasoning, design, creativity, imagination and critical thinking.
